Blackard Modern Farmhouse

Drawing their inspiration from the Windsong Project by one of my favorite designers, Studio McGee, Barry and Kristyn Blackard designed and built this impeccable custom home on four beautifully treed acres. They incorporated a touch of modern that tweaks the farmhouse aesthetic just beautifully. Their entire home is well thought out, featuring timeless design combined with functional style and simple sophistication. An open, airy layout with clearly defined rooms allows the Blackard’s to entertain in grand style while retaining the feel of more traditionally outlined spaces. An abundance of oversized windows allows the beauty of nature to become a focal point throughout their home. They categorically accomplished their goal of creating a space that would “feel cozy but still give us that modern look we loved.”

The successful marriage of the warm, comfortable feel of a farmhouse with the stark minimalism found in modern design creates the perfect modern farmhouse exterior. With clean lines, symmetrical shape and a neutral color palette with pops of bold color, the exterior of this home is decidedly modern. However, the wrap around porch and columns add just the perfect touch of farmhouse. The painted brick, vertical lines of the siding, and smooth columns add texture and bring depth to the neutral color palette. Adding natural elements, Pennsylvania Blue Stone and natural wood tongue and groove, to the porch design, is just one more nod to the rustic and cozy warmth of the farmhouse design. Rather than traditional electric lights, the Blackard’s went with gas lanterns flanking their front door. According to Kristyn, they give off the perfect romantic glow that is just captivating. What a perfectly warm and inviting way to greet your guests as they enter your home and pay homage to the days of old. Being tucked away in the woods allows their kids to explore and allows them to have “window treatment free” windows! How amazing is that!

To me, the design of a kitchen reveals the true heart of the home and that is extremely true in this case. This kitchen is well thought out and organized. It gives a sense of warmth and character while also reflecting the minimalistic approach seen throughout the home. A large island complete with seating galore provides the perfect spot for an easy family dinner, a place for the kids to do homework or just chat as momma cooks dinner, a gathering place for friends to stand around and catch up on their lives, or an impromptu desk for a multi-tasking momma. The stunning wall of windows allows the room to feel connected to the beauty of nature with minimal visual interruption. This allows the perfect viewpoint to enjoy nature and all of its beauty or to watch little ones playing in the great outdoors all while keeping up with the household tasks. The modern farmhouse design is all about practicality, function and minimalism and that is seen throughout this kitchen! Adding a Servo Drive to their trash bin allows easy access, which is perfect for those times your hands are full! Built in organization for trays and cookie sheets, a knife block and utensil divider keeps their cabinetry organized and functional. Throughout the home, you will see what an impeccable job Kristyn did of mixing metals! She loves all of them so you will find everything from brass to black iron intermingled throughout the home.

Combining their walk-in pantry with their mudroom is just one more way their home design focuses on functionality. Behind those doors and drawers, the kids can store their backpacks, shoes, coats, art projects, etc. while the space still looks immaculate. Additionally, it helps to solve the age-old problem of “mom, where is my…” as most of the time it can now easily be found here. The countertop on the pantry side holds small appliances which allows the kitchen counters to stay clutter free. One thing Kristyn did, which I feel is ingenious, is she ran a water line to her coffee maker so she will never have to fill it! There are big, spacious drawers under the counter that serve as snack drawers! This makes it easy for little hands to access snacks without having to wait for an adult. The spacious pantry shelves allow everything to be perfectly organized out of site of the main kitchen area. Yet again, this speaks to the minimalistic yet functional vibe of the modern farmhouse.

While the room to the right of the main entrance blurs the traditional lines, it speaks heavily to the ability of the modern farmhouse aesthetic to create new boundaries that are sophisticated, luxurious, and dramatic. The rich color, texture and modern silhouette of the emerald green sofa provide a focal point that elevates this room beyond the conventional modern farmhouse style.

With a grand ceiling vaulted to 16 feet setting the tone for this captivating living room, this space is rooted in rustic charm! The clean lines of the furnishings and bold lighting choice mixed with shiplap and warm natural wood tones create an inviting, laid-back atmosphere that is fitting of the modern farmhouse aesthetic. Mixing textures: the caramel colored leather couch, grey tweed chairs and couch, black leather tufted ottoman with brass, lined striped pillows and sweater knit pillows, emphasis comfort and casual living, which is completely necessary with children and pets! In their original design, there was a fireplace where the large, picture window now sits. However, the Blackard’s opted to embrace the beauty of the world outside in a seamless way by choosing to move the fireplace to the back patio and installing the large window instead.

As stated before, the modern farmhouse style is all about functionality. Adding a water fountain speaks perfectly to this! With three children running underfoot, this saves so many dirty cups and allows little mouths to get drinks anytime they want without having to wait for help. As we tour the home, you will notice there are wall mount faucets in every bathroom. They are much easier to clean and are a simple way to add a modern look to every single bathroom.

This space was designed all about momma! Since many hours of her day are spent in this room, Kristyn designed this room as a bright, cheerful space that is highly functional. The vibrant green wallpaper layered with plenty of textured white, shows plenty of personality and character with a hint of mimimalism. With plenty of storage, laundry basket cubbies and counter space for folding laundry, organization abounds in this room.

Though many questioned their decision to amp up the modern in modern farmhouse by taking this office black, the finished product is astounding! Stately, dignified and handsome are three words I would choose to define it! With plenty of texture and lines adding visual interest to the dark color and the wood floors and vibrant rug adding depth, this is one polished room!

How fun is this life size doll house they built for their daughter! They decorate it for each season, just like it were a real home! I also love that they used a dutch door for the playroom! This enables you to see into the space but also keeps the children from escaping!

Remember that fireplace that was moved out of the living room? How gorgeous does it look on their back patio! They also added ceiling heaters so they can ensure this space is usable for entertaining all year round!
Though the modern farmhouse style has become so popular in recent days, I love how the Blackard’s did such an amazing job of focusing on the feeling of the modern farmhouse and not the trend. Everything about the home feels very unique to them and evokes a spirit that cozy and welcoming. There is a major focus on functionality and almost every room in their home speaks to practicality. I hope you enjoyed this tour! Let me know what your favorite feature or room was!
