Coastal Remodel

Noell Jett

Updated: Sep 21, 2022

In 2010, Brandon and Tara Williams, along with their three sons, Cole, Chase, and Crew, purchased their 1950’s ranch style fixer-upper. After sitting vacant for over a year, it was quite dilapidated! However, they were able to see past the years of neglect and see the potential beauty. Breathing new life into the home with a major renovation became their ultimate goal. For several years, they made only small improvements, knowing the day would come they would completely renovate and remodel the entire home! While the house already had a decent amount of square footage, as is typical for older homes, the layout had walls breaking up smaller living spaces and was not conducive to the busy life of a growing family of 5. For eight years, the family planned and devised precisely what they would change, move and add on to make the homework best for the needs of their family. By reconfiguring the house to repurpose and utilize so much of the current space in a smarter way that was more suited to their needs, they were able only to have to add on the master suite and a small amount of square footage to the living space.               Located about a mile from gorgeous views of the Chesapeake Bay, and only 20 minutes from the Virginia Beach oceanfront, their home is the perfect location for this beach-loving family! Surfing, paddle boarding, and sunset picnics overlooking the bay are all part of life for the Williams’ family, and Tara incorporated this love for the beach into her decor palate. A base of whites and warm wood tones, complemented by soft sea glass and pops of blues bring that calming coastal feel indoors. While classic styles provide the base layer of decor, fun trends and patterns add a playful sense of breezy beach living.

Kitchen

With a 10′ island as the focal point, this kitchen is the perfect spot for family time and entertaining! Plenty of counter space allows the whole family to sit around and visit. Opening up the walls between the rooms not only gives the home a more modern feel, it brings the family closer together by creating natural opportunities to visit. Tara sketched out her range hood and her contractor was able to custom build it for her. She says it is one of her favorite details in their kitchen!

Dining Area

Adjacent to the kitchen, originally you would have found a formal dining space. However, by taking down the wall that separated the spaces, it is now open to the kitchen making it a more modern, open space. The blue wall paper and capiz shells light fixture add the perfect coastal touches.

Pantry

The beautiful blue barn door off the dining room leads to their 12’x6′ butler’s pantry. What an awesome, spacious room! All their small appliances are housed in this room, freeing up the kitchen counters. Butcher block countertops provide the perfect spot for food prep, which is kept close by thanks to the extra refrigerator in the space. They also ran a water line for an ice make ensuring a constant supply of ice for entertaining.

Formal Living Room

As you  enter the front door, you will find the ‘formal’ living room. This space is used as a kids game and media room, giving them their own space to watch movies or entertain their friends separate from the adults. Adding a shiplap accent wall and a reclaimed wood mantel gave the room a sense of warmth and character. Tara actually made that amazing driftwood mirror over the foyer table from driftwood she found!

Wet Bar

Choosing a fun mother of pearl herringbone tile, gave this little bar area such a fun pop of pattern! Small spaces are a great area to go bold with your design decisions to create a fun space!

Family Room

Once a sunroom on the back of the house, the family room was completely rebuilt. Floor to ceiling shiplap on the fireplace and wood planked vaulted ceilings give the room an airy and bright feel. Detailing on the ceilings and natural textures cozy up the space while sticking with the clean, coastal feel.

Mud Room

Right off the kitchen, with glass french doors separating the space, you will find this gorgeous mudroom. Originally this space was a very awkward den but Tara knew a large multipurpose room would serve their family better than a third living space. While most people thought she was crazy for dedicating such a large space to a mudroom, Tara found a way to make it incredibly functional!  The 6’x3′ island serves as the perfect space for homework, crafting and laundry folding. Custom built cubbies and the family command center mean that clutter stays in that room and out of the kitchen.

Master Bathroom

One of Tara’s favorite parts of her addition was their master bathroom! Spacious, light and airy, a very ‘spa-like’ feel permeates the space. Tara centered the tone of the room around light wood tones that remind her of driftwood, using a jute runner and herringbone patterned tile to add  texture and movement. Touches of sea glass, shells and tropical greenery  complete the  coastal feel, while adding the draped white washed bead chandelier brings a coastal chic feel to the space.

Kids Areas

Choosing decor for these spaces was simple! Surfboard storage and a love of sharks dictated a coastal theme! Tara allowed her boys  to help decide on their decor which is a great way to get kids involved and excited about a remodel or new home!
